About the space
Doukan 7002 is an open space for artistic experimentation and social engagement. Located in the storefront at 7002 North California in West Ridge/West Rogers Park, the site hosts programs including Window-in-Residency, an installation and performance space available to artists for temporary projects and Kenana, a social art practice residency program for emerging artists in Chicago.
Who we are
Hamdi Attia : Hamdi Attia was born in 1964, Assiut, Egypt. He studied at the College of Fine Arts in Cairo, at the Egyptian Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, and at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His work engages in experimental vocabulary, using video, mapping, drawing, and sculpture. He represented Egypt at the Venice Biennial in 1995, where he received the top pavilion prize with Akram El-Magdoub. His work has been featured in private and group exhibitions in Cairo, New York, Paris, Rome, Sao Paulo, Detroit, Copenhagen, Oslo, Amman, and Philadelphia. Attia currently lives and works between Cairo and Chicago.

Emma Chubb : A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Emma Chubb is an art historian and Ph.D. candidate at Northwestern University. Her research focuses on contemporary art, visual culture, and political history, particularly in North Africa. In addition to her academic work, she has contributed to numerous exhibition and community arts projects at L'appartement 22 / Radio Apartment 22 (Rabat, Morocco), the 3rd Arts in Marrakech Biennale (Marrakech, Morocco), the 2008 Gwangju Biennale (Gwangju, South Korea), the Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia, PA), Philagrafika (Philadelphia, PA), the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, PA), and the Friends Neighborhood Guild (Philadelphia, PA). She received her B.A. in art history and French literature from Haverford College in 2006. She currently lives in Chicago.

Nada Shalaby : An interdisciplinary artist born in Cairo, she received an MA in Middle East Studies at the American University in Cairo and an MFA degree in Art Theory & Practice at Northwestern University. In 2005, she co-founded a collective of Arab American artists in the Bay Area. She began renting the space at 7002 North California Avenue as part of her MFA thesis work in 2009. In 2011, she was awarded a Social Entreneurship Fund grant to establish the Kenana artist residency program. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Egypt. She currently teaches at The American University in Cairo and works between Cairo and Chicago.

Kantara Souffrant : Kantara Souffrant is a first-generation Haitian-American artist-scholar interested in interrogating visuality, performance and performance interventions, and “ethical” modes of seeing, being, representing and witnessing humanity in a “post-quake” environment. Her approach to art creation is informed by her studies of African Diasporic faith and spiritual practices in which spiritual/ritual practices, performance, art creation, and communal transformation are inseparable. She has shared her artistic and scholarly work at numerous venues including: The Caribbean Cultural Center and African Diasporic Institute, New York University, Judson Church, Northwestern University, praxis place (Chicago), Fisher Gallery (Oberlin, OH), and The University of York. A Ph.D student in Performance Studies at Northwestern University, Kantara received her M.A. in Performance Studies from New York University in 2010, and her B.A. in African American Studies, Comparative American Studies, and Studio Art from Oberlin College in 2008.

Mary Wees : Mary Wees is an emerging artist from Omaha Nebraska. She currently lives and works in Chicago. In 2009 Wees graduated with a bachelor’s degree in studio arts and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Creighton University. She has had two major solo exhibits in Omaha, one in 2009 at the Gallery at Bancroft Street, and the other in 2008 at Bellwether Boutique. Wees was honored with a residency at Empty Room of Omaha in 2009 where she organized and participated in a collaborative art project with 25 other artists.
